Clunie's "****book of surgery" is a surgical **** aimed at the medical undergraduate and covers all the essential topics for exams. While it is not as comprehensive as Way's "Current Surgical Diagnosis and Treatment", it is much more readable - the information is explained clearly and is therefore easily digested. It also has more up-to-date management of diseases (the last edition of Way came out in 1994). The problem-solving section at the back of Clunie is extremely useful. The book is certainly an excellent buy for Australasian students, who rarely have the opportunity to read ****s with local data. My main criticisms would be: the lack of a chapter on cardiothoracic surgery; no specific section dedicated to chronic liver disease; very few diagrams.

Whilst some books provide vague guidelines, this book provides a difinitive structure for practices. The information is broken down into topical chapters and reads easily. The surgical management of venous disease is filled with dichotomies. Procedures span the spectrum from the most mundane saphenous vein stripping (one of the first procedures I did as an intern) to sophisticated central venous reconstructions. Venous surgery tends not to be glamorous, playing second fiddle to arterial reconstruction but frequently is technically more demanding and very dependant on meticulous technique. Diagnosis may be straightforward as in identifying lower extremity varicosities or extremely challenging as in confirming a true thoracic outlet syndrome. Though responsible for a great deal of morbidity in the population as a whole, it receives less attention than it deserves from caregivers. The patient who presents with DVT now frequently is sent home immediately on injectable anticoagulants “per protocol,” deceptively minimizing the long-term sequelae of chronic venous stasis disease. Venous disease is the Rodney Dangerfield of surgery, getting little respect. This is a mistake as Dr. Illig and his colleagues capably illustrate in this issue of Operative Techniques in General Surgery. They show the numerous surgical options available to treat various venous disorders and the evolving nature of those treatments. This broad reaching issue spans newer treatments for the lowly varicosity all the way to the complexities of vena cava and subclavian vein reconstruction. It's a lot of help while you're going through your surgery rotation. As much as I would have liked to have read the **** book, there isn't a lot of time due to the long hours of [COLOR=orange ! important][COLOR=orange ! important]work[/color]. This book helps fill in the gaps. Some things might be too simplified, so it might be helpful to supplement with the required books.

At least half this book is exactly the same as First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship, but it does a good [COLOR=orange ! important][COLOR=orange ! important]job[/color][/color] of describing pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, and surgical [COLOR=orange ! important][COLOR=orange ! important]management[/color][/color] of issues. It's helpful that it includes chapters on the various surgical subspecialties.

I wouldn't say that it is particularly high yield because it's over 500 pages. It would be the most helpful to someone who hasn't already had their medicine clerkship.

The book (and others in the series I have used) is quite good, with clear, well-summarized material. There are a few caveats, however:
1. In this 1st edition, there are many typos. Most are obvious (mispelling, repeating a word or phrase or phrase twice in a row, etc.), but betray a lack of proofreading. I THINK all the important information is accurate, but the typos don't inspire confidence...
2. The font size is big, the line spacing generous, and there's lots of white space on the pages, which makes for easy reading, but as a result it's not a small book. It would be nice if some of the font sizing/line spacing were sacrificed for a more pocketable book that might fit in a white coat, like the "Recall" series. (The "Recall" series has its hits and misses, but Surgical Recall is a must-have book for the surgery rotation. Really. It goes very well with First Aid or the similar "Blueprints.")
3. The "Blueprints" series is very similar to this "First Aid" series, with the addition of a test prep. question/answer section in the back. It would be nice if First Aid had SOME sort of review mechanism--maybe Q/A's at the end of each chapter or at the end of the book.
Overall, it's a good series, even with my "gripes."

I found the 7th edition of Schwartz a chore to read. However, while the recent edition of Sabiston has abridged and cut detail in favor of glossy color pictures, the 8th edition of Schwartz is a well balanced ****book, with an appropriate level of detail and an excellent basis in basic science. The chapters are also immensely readable! This is the **** that I intend to finish reading during my surgical residency...

I am a fourth year medical student going into general surgery and this is the only surgical ****book that I have read in significantly. I chose this book because it got the best rating in First Aid for the Wards. I have completed all but the last 100 pages of this 1870 page ****. It begins with a 500 page, 14 chapter section entitled "Part I, Basic Considerations" that is mostly surgical basic sciences. This material is mostly well-covered. The clinical application is not always clear but that is not the intention of these chapters as far as I can tell. Chapters on SIRS, infection, wound healing, and cell/molecular considerations stood out. In "Part II, Specific Considerations" there are chapters arranged by organ systems that cover the various areas of general surgery, followed by individual chapters on surgical subspecialties such as urology and ortho. These chapters vary somewhat in style. The congenital heart disease chapter was brief and a bit hard to follow partially due to insufficient discussion of embryology and fetal circulation. The acquired heart disease chapter was too brief in my opinion. The esophagus and vascular system chapters very lengthy and thorough. The other chapters are adequate. The gyn chapter and neurosurg chapters in the subspecialty areas are actually pretty good and have some useful info for general surgeons. The chapters generally speaking are less oriented towards descriptions of the surgery performed. They tend to have a brief discussion of normal anatomy and physiology, followed by in depth discussion of diagnosis including various tests and imaging studies, followed by descriptions of benign diseases and their medical and surgical management, followed by malignant diseases of that organ and their management. The chapter on colon and rectum is an exception since it discusses the various resections separately from the disease entities. The gyn section is heavy on descriptions of surgeries.

Since I cannot compare this **** to others in the field, I am not sure how to rate it. The chapters have some variation in style. The discussion of diagnosis and management including diagnostic testing and imaging is very thorough. The descriptions of the actual surgeries is usually somewhat brief and not always complete. The illustrations of normal anatomy and of surgeries could be better. However, that may be more of a job for a surgical atlas, which is next on my list of things to read. The heart chapters (congenital and acquired) could be extended and improved. Otherwise, this is a pretty decent ****book that is mostly fairly readable.

I found the 7th edition of Schwartz a chore to read. However, while the recent edition of Sabiston has abridged and cut detail in favor of glossy color pictures, the 8th edition of Schwartz is a well balanced ****book, with an appropriate level of detail and an excellent basis in basic science. The chapters are also immensely readable! This is the **** that I intend to finish reading during my surgical residency...

I am a fourth year medical student going into general surgery and this is the only surgical ****book that I have read in significantly. I chose this book because it got the best rating in First Aid for the Wards. I have completed all but the last 100 pages of this 1870 page ****. It begins with a 500 page, 14 chapter section entitled "Part I, Basic Considerations" that is mostly surgical basic sciences. This material is mostly well-covered. The clinical application is not always clear but that is not the intention of these chapters as far as I can tell. Chapters on SIRS, infection, wound healing, and cell/molecular considerations stood out. In "Part II, Specific Considerations" there are chapters arranged by organ systems that cover the various areas of general surgery, followed by individual chapters on surgical subspecialties such as urology and ortho. These chapters vary somewhat in style. The congenital heart disease chapter was brief and a bit hard to follow partially due to insufficient discussion of embryology and fetal circulation. The acquired heart disease chapter was too brief in my opinion. The esophagus and vascular system chapters very lengthy and thorough. The other chapters are adequate. The gyn chapter and neurosurg chapters in the subspecialty areas are actually pretty good and have some useful info for general surgeons. The chapters generally speaking are less oriented towards descriptions of the surgery performed. They tend to have a brief discussion of normal anatomy and physiology, followed by in depth discussion of diagnosis including various tests and imaging studies, followed by descriptions of benign diseases and their medical and surgical management, followed by malignant diseases of that organ and their management. The chapter on colon and rectum is an exception since it discusses the various resections separately from the disease entities. The gyn section is heavy on descriptions of surgeries.

Since I cannot compare this **** to others in the field, I am not sure how to rate it. The chapters have some variation in style. The discussion of diagnosis and management including diagnostic testing and imaging is very thorough. The descriptions of the actual surgeries is usually somewhat brief and not always complete. The illustrations of normal anatomy and of surgeries could be better. However, that may be more of a job for a surgical atlas, which is next on my list of things to read. The heart chapters (congenital and acquired) could be extended and improved. Otherwise, this is a pretty decent ****book that is mostly fairly readable.

The surgical management of venous disease is filled with dichotomies. Procedures span the spectrum from the most mundane saphenous vein stripping (one of the first procedures I did as an intern) to sophisticated central venous reconstructions. Venous surgery tends not to be glamorous, playing second fiddle to arterial reconstruction but frequently is technically more demanding and very dependant on meticulous technique. Diagnosis may be straightforward as in identifying lower extremity varicosities or extremely challenging as in confirming a true thoracic outlet syndrome. Though responsible for a great deal of morbidity in the population as a whole, it receives less attention than it deserves from caregivers. The patient who presents with DVT now frequently is sent home immediately on injectable anticoagulants “per protocol,” deceptively minimizing the long-term sequelae of chronic venous stasis disease. Venous disease is the Rodney Dangerfield of surgery, getting little respect. This is a mistake as Dr. Illig and his colleagues capably illustrate in this issue of Operative Techniques in General Surgery. They show the numerous surgical options available to treat various venous disorders and the evolving nature of those treatments. This broad reaching issue spans newer treatments for the lowly varicosity all the way to the complexities of vena cava and subclavian vein reconstruction.
